What should you do immediately after a slip and fall accident?

On Behalf of Conliffe, Sandmann & Sullivan, PLLC | Sep 3, 2025 | Personal Injury

Slip and fall accidents can happen anywhere, from grocery stores to sidewalks. Even minor falls can cause serious injuries, so acting quickly afterward can make a big difference. Taking the right steps helps protect health and ensures important details are not lost.

Seek medical attention right away

Even if injuries seem minor, get checked by a medical professional. Some problems, like concussions or internal injuries, may not appear immediately. Documenting injuries early provides a clear record of what happened.

Report the incident

Inform the property owner, manager, or employer about the fall. Give details about what caused the accident and how it happened. Reporting the incident helps create an official record while the details are fresh.

Take photos and gather evidence

Photograph the area where the fall occurred, including wet floors, broken steps, or uneven surfaces. If possible, take pictures of injuries as well. Collect names and contact information of anyone who witnessed the fall. Evidence helps show how the accident happened.

Keep a record of expenses and symptoms

Track medical bills, prescriptions, and missed work days. Also, note ongoing pain, mobility issues, or other symptoms. Keeping detailed records supports recovery planning and shows the impact of the accident.

Avoid making public statements

Do not post about the accident on social media or discuss it publicly. Sharing details can complicate claims or insurance processes. Stick to official channels when reporting.

Taking these steps after a slip and fall helps ensure personal safety and preserves important details about the accident. Acting quickly and carefully can make recovery smoother and provide clarity about what happened, supporting both health and practical matters.
